Once all design decisions are made, a formal estimate will be written. This includes a cost estimate for all work we’ve agreed upon: plants, materials, supplies, labor, etc. Upon agreement of the estimate, a deposit starts the process. The client usually pays one third to commence; one third upon delivery of all plants, materials, and supplies; and one third upon completion of the job. Smaller jobs may be paid in halves, if desired. Whichever works best for you.
Upon receipt of deposits, prep work begins with: ordering plants, arranging schedules, delivery of plants and materials, and site protection – where we protect the inside of the home in the event we need to gain access to the work area through the home. This is always done with the utmost care. Booties and latex gloves are worn to ensure no marks are left behind. Furniture is carefully moved, if necessary. Rolls of protective material are taped to the floor so carpeting or hardwood floors are protected. All plants are brought through the house or apartment in plastic bags. Respect for doormen, other tenants, the Superintendent of the building, and client’s household staff are always paramount. The Brownstone Gardener speaks fluent Spanish as a second language, which can be very helpful at times.
This same level of care is given while in your garden, as we treat everything with respect and safely move about your project space. Holes are dug, plants are placed, starter fertilizer is applied, and everything gets thoroughly watered. Mulch is applied to keep moisture in the soil, keep weeds down, and offer a finished look. Over time, mulch breaks down to improve soil quality.
